Agriculture, IoT & Blue Economy

Livestock has historically served as the macroeconomic backbone of the Somaliland economy, accounting for over 60% of our GDP and serving as our primary export to the Gulf nations. However, under the 2026 strategic mandate, our national focus has heavily pivoted toward climate resilience, smart agriculture, and the untapped potential of our 850-kilometer coastline.

In the arid interior, Somaliland's tech sector is leading the charge against climate volatility. Local engineers are actively implementing advanced IoT (Internet of Things) water management solutions—most notably the Biyo Kaab project. This sophisticated hardware and software integration monitors, preserves, and optimizes critical groundwater reserves using remote sensor networks, ensuring sustainable water distribution for both nomadic pastoral communities and emerging commercial farming sectors.

This sector represents a massive, highly profitable opportunity for foreign agritech firms specializing in harsh-climate cultivation. The Ministry of Agriculture is fast-tracking licenses for joint ventures focused on solar-powered desalination, precision drip irrigation systems, and the cultivation of drought-resistant staple crops. Furthermore, the "Blue Economy" initiative is seeking international capital to establish sustainable, commercial-grade fisheries and deep-water cold storage facilities along the Gulf of Aden.
