The Nation of Poets

Culture, Arts & Heritage

Somaliland is universally recognized as the "Nation of Poets." Our cultural identity is deeply rooted in a sophisticated oral tradition, where poetry (Gabay) serves not merely as art, but as the historical medium for mass communication, political discourse, and customary law (Xeer).

This rich heritage seamlessly blends ancient nomadic traditions with modern urban intellectualism. Hargeisa, the capital, is the undisputed cultural heart of the Somali-speaking world. Every year, it hosts the Hargeisa International Book Fair (HIBF), one of the largest and most prestigious literary festivals in East Africa, drawing scholars, authors, and diplomats from across the globe.

Our culture places immense value on communal dialogue, consensus-building, and hospitality. It is this exact cultural framework—specifically the traditional Guurti (House of Elders)—that allowed Somaliland to independently broker peace and forge a stable democratic state from the ashes of civil war in 1991, without the need for external intervention.
